Can't seem to import stuff

Can't seem to import stuff

Postby emkay4597 » 30 Mar 2015, 06:27

Hi all,
I'm sure Im doing something silly but I can import an object ok but can't seem to get the texture back onto the geometry.

I have copied the UV as a png file and placed it in the models folder right with the fbx file.

Thanks for any help.

Should be able to just drag and drop the texture onto the model, I find sometimes it takes a bit of time but click and drag and keep holding mouse button down until you see an image of the texture on your mouse pointer and then drop that on your model

Hi emkay4597,

Have you added the Folder to your Resources? (Right-click on the folder, Resource Management->Add folder to Resources).

Also, you can set the Material in the "Properties" tab under "Model".

I have found that occasionally I would have to restart Skyline after adding the folder to the resources before it got picked up correctly (haven't had this issue for a while now, so I assume it is working fine in the latest version??).

Thank you all for the replies.

No I hadn't added that folder but I did and it seems to make no difference.

I have been working on many things tonight, (real life stuff... cleaning, truck etc.) so I haven't been able to give it a proper coherent attempt really.

I will give it my focused attention in the morning.

Also we have similar computers =p
come to think of it... if there is anything with my system that may be an issue..
I have AMD video cards so I don't know if thats an issue with various nvidia utilities?

edit - i should add in here, it seems to crash often while I try to add the texture. I also get error messages about the mesh not belonging to me or something...? I dunno.

anyway thanks for the replies

Great responses above, they cover the main areas nicely to check first.

Q) Does the texture have spaces in the name? As this is currently not supported by skyline.
We are working on this internally already at the moment and should be available in the upcoming weeks/months.

Q) Does your material inside the material editor or .material file have any spaces in the name?

Perhaps a few pictures of the assets in the folder or a video will help to locate the problem.
Or copy the file names down and post them here so we can see how they are spelt.

Hope this helps.

I'd be willing to bet that is in fact the issue.

I will rename the file after work and do some experimenting.

Thank again for the info, you are always so quick to reply with helpful advice.

A+ support =)

The problem seemed to be using a *.png format image.
I changed it to bmp and it seemed to work.

I have to admit I was poking around a lot and don't fully know if this is coincidence or the issue at hand yet but it appears I'm on to a solution.

Thanks again all.

In both cases I believe the images are proper natural squares (1024's i think), is this a constraint in skyline or no?

Had a bit of memory blank today and had same issues that turned out to be a space in the file name I didn't realize was there, and just on image format if you're going to compile as a game I would recommend using DDS format for games, loads quicker :D

lol, beat me to it hehe..
i'll post anyway; png files are supported as are many other formats. DDS are the best for memory and performance.

Q) Was the mesh exported using a .bmp? If so, you will need to import the mesh, open the material editor and drag the png file onto the texture slot. Then save. This will now use the new texture instead.

Check out tatties first video on getting missing textures to show:

Hope this helps.
