Skyline Documentation Problems

Skyline Documentation Problems

Postby SolarPortal » 25 Jan 2013, 18:36

Hello Skyline Game Devs,

Just to inform you that the documents may not display the correct language, someone or some bot has destroyed part of the pages by converting them to chinese.
We are in the process of deciding whether we should make an offline manual instead to save any further problems.

Yes but it seems someone has by passed them!

We had to employ many plugins to prevent this forum getting 100 of spam a day. They should have better things to do other than messing up peoples work!
We dont really want to spend time designing or protecting the sites as time is better spend developing Skyline ;)

Exactly the reason I gave up on a php management site and gone back to good old http

You cant really go wrong with a offline old fashioned manual

I much prefer the online manual and then have a php script go through and convert the entire manual to a .pdf once a night

Having the manual online is especially useful during the initial stages of development/re-development because as things change, you get the new versions live instead of refering something from a manual you downloaded a week prioir only to find that several items had been outdated, changed, or completely removed the previous day..

I think for a successful offline manual there would have to be considerable tech-writing work done for every release just prioir to release which would delay every release by the time it takes from when you say "this next release is done so we'll start on the next one" to however long it takes your technical writer to review and update the offline manual....

The underline issue is that dokuwiki allowed for malace users to gain access directly because it was designed by a group focused on making their wiki system as robust and versitle as possible. Contry to popular belief, sometimes simple is better ;)

i'll e-mail you guys an idea on this..

Yes we agree ucm, writing a manual takes time to keep updated with new development. I think the time for the manual is once the main development phase is completed so we can currently focus on Skyline. We feel the new video tutorials are the way to move forwards with this as they can show far more than we would in the initial /current manual and they take less time out from developing Skyline and are more fun to make. This is not to say there wont be any documents just that we will focus on the videos for now.

We welcome any views on this matter ;)

@ucm: thanks got your mail.
