Terrain Multi - Lights

Terrain Multi - Lights

Postby StarFire » 21 Feb 2015, 20:25

We can now use multiple lights on a terrain. :geek:

We have created a new terrain material to handle upto 8 point lights and the obligatory direction light. As you can imagine this does come at a performance cost. So we have set up a combo on the terrain panel that enables you to switch terrain materials on the fly. This way if you don't require any more than the standard light you can select the default single light material and save performance but if your vision requires the extra lights you now have the freedom to be creative.
This feature will be in the next upgrade. :D

Skylines terrains look great with many point lights, they really do push out the texture normal maps ;)

Whilst being away from cyberspace I have created a few new scenes exploring the way Skyline can be used to light a night time scene. By adjusting the scene IBL to balance the objects illumination to the terrains and keeping a directional light as moon light, scenes can have a great atmospheric depth. If I get time, I would like to get this demo scene running as a small chilling monster shooter. Darkness hiding the hordes of mutated creatures ready to leap out on crazy shotgun toting player - Bring it on! lol

Oh forgot to mention that I am close to having spot lights on the terrain, just a couple of issues to resolve with the shader. So for now you can have your warrior wandering the wilderness lit by the naked flame of your torch. Headlights and flashlights coming soon. ;)

I have just nailed the wee blighter that has been causing the terrain spot lights from working correctly. So a big yay! from me as Skyline now has a multi light terrain shader that supports:

  • Directional light,
  • Point,
  • Spot

There will be many tweaks and adjustments over the months to get it looking its best but I would say its a go! :D

Just had a play with the buggy and added 2 spots as headlights.
