Steam version ?

Steam version ?

Postby SpiderMack » 17 Mar 2018, 14:18

Hi,

I think Skyline would benefit to have a Steam version.

Despite Steam or country taxes, Steam has a huge benefit for 3D engines of exposure, the number of Steam buyers revenue will quickly overcome the revenue on Skyline site with very low exposure, this is a good point to consider.

Other software like Substance Designer has their own site, but they also wanted more exposure to indie and users that doesn't work in game industry, so they also sell on Steam, and despite taxes, it's another big source of revenues for them.

There is many ways to distribute Skyline on Steam, it could be a limited or starter version ( like no multiplayer , no visual scripting , or no customizable splash screen ) , so most hobbyst and amateurs could use it while more experimented users would buy a more complete version on Skyline site.

Skyline is not ready for prime time (bugs, export, fbx, essential features missing), but it could be ready this year, so Steam is something to consider otherwise it will stay as a niche and not known from indies and others hobbysts.

Agreed, however, we do want to make sure the engine is as ready as it can be before hitting a large market, hence the limited marketing we have applied.

Currently we are attracting a few users that are passing through and the Lite version is being downloaded many times.

Steam is not of the table and we have the account already setup to distribute on steam, its just a matter of getting the engine as close to its best form as possible to reduce the amount of trolls that hit us.. too many bad reviews will not help and possibly make things worse than not going on steam at all.

Thanks for your input :)

This is not always trolls , but users that expect what is written about a 3D engine features, when they read a feature is available they think it's fully working without bugs and without needing a work around (while there is always bugs in any 3D Engine).
A demo is a demo, users find bugs or features not working only when they buy it and use it enough.

This is why 3D Engine should be clear about features, limitations and issues to avoid bad situations with users expecting all features to be fully working in most situations.
Skyline game .exe export fails for example or FBX import is not working with IK, and there is some things missing, this should be clearly indicated as 3D engine not ready yet and in development, instead of stating it's out of Beta it should be stated as Early Access like or Pre release.

Well, Skyline is very interesting and a pleasure to use, when it will be ready it will deserve a better exposure and Steam should help :)
