2D game devolopment

2D game devolopment

Postby AcePharoh » 15 Feb 2014, 22:46

So here's a big thing I'm wondering about with skyline. As we go down the line towards a release, will we have 2d development included? There are plenty of advantages to 2d games, and I feel including this will secure our rankings to the competion(such as unity, who's most recent update included improved 2d support)

We are just adding the final stage of the new UI system to Skyline. So far there is a cool new real time, html script driven UI editor which can make standard developer tools for your project( windows, sliders, checkboxes etc) and then be used to make full interactive game screens. We are currently hooking this up to Skylines main scene editor so it can be include with the scene. We have also planned many lua commands to control the new UI system and many of these will enable dynamic content, by using these and lua to code your collisions you would be able to use the UI system for a 2D sprite game. Alternatively it has become popular to use the 3D scene and a fixed camera for developing a 2D style of game (2.5D).
If we get a lot of call for more advanced 2D features we will look deeper into this area of development ;)

BTW: We have a running poc of a node based script editing environment which we hope to get to you later this year ;)

Alright then, thank you for replying. Also, looking forward to that node system, favorite feature of the UDK.

2D is esential in 2014 game engines. Because almost every indie developer wants to hit android market or ios. 2D is needed here :-))) , and later maybe some conection to Esoteric spine or Spriter pro would be nice.

These look like good options but we could not afford them at the moment and nor could the end user. We will see if there is an open source version we could implement, as middleware companies want more than we can afford to pay out due to the low selling price of Skyline. It would not be a problem if Skyline was priced like the competitors but we wanted to keep the costs low for the hobby user.
