Just a heads up guys as I know some of you will be upgrading to windows 10 on the 29th, after installing skyline it will tell you there is 5 updates during this time don't click away from skyline or even minimise it as it will cause it to crash and for the update to fail.

ahh that explains things, i clicked away to keep working whilst it updated, now i know, didn't crash just says not responding but task manager still shows skyline using .6MBps and up to 1.2MBps at times so might leave it for a bit and see what happens

Im new here I download the demo install and start to getting familiar with the engine but is crashing a lot I have a windows 8.1 dual Xeon with a Titan Video Card hd capacity 20 tb im using unity 5 and UE4 and is not crashing so I think it have something to do with Skyline
can I get some idea where to look

Hi risc,

Welcome to Skyline 8-)

Firstly, I'd better point out that Skyline is still in Beta, so there will be some issues when compared to UE4 & Unity! I used to run Skyline fine on my machines under Win 8.1, so would really need some more info about the crashes :ugeek:

Secondly, the best place for checking what Skyline was doing when it crashes is in a file called "Skyline_TechSupport.txt", which can be found in the "Win32_Release" folder of your Skyline installation, which should be somewhere similar to:

If you find anything odd in that file, feel free to post here and either the Devs or one of the regulars will answer ( usually within a few hours depending on your timezone ;) ).

Also, you could check any Windows Error Reporting files generated by Windows? These should be in:

Users\XXXX\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WER\


Hint: Look for files that have "AppCrash_Skyline_Editor" in the name.

Can i ask you to upload the "skyline_techSupport.txt" and the "Skyline.log" to help hunt the problem. You can pm me or email "support@aurasoft-skyline.co.uk" and i will respond there. But dealing with it on the forums is also fine and will help other users who encounter these issues as well.

If it is a process that can be replicated by ourselves, then we may be able to help fix the problem quicker. A video is also welcome as this shows your procedure instantly.

We will all help you get through this problem so you can enjoy skyline even more. :D

Please note: the free version is 4 versions out of date compared to the commercial version, so it is lacking a lot of cool features and fixes that make it more fun and more stable. we will be updating the free version soon though :)

Second note: With that gfx card, you will want to lock the fps to 60 to stop your card going into overdrive. This can be done by clicking on scene settings usually located in the bottom right of the default layout. When the panel is open, you should see a property near the top of the panel called "Lock FPS" with a number 60 next to it. Check this box to lock the fps to 60 or uncheck to get all frames, but on big cards this could send them into overdrive lol :P

Hey thank you for all your tips, yes I know Skyline is on the process of development I mention unity and ue4 to let you know those are running find on my system not to compare features. :D I will upload those files as you request it.

by any chance were you switching between forward and deferred rendering?

Deferred lighting does not accept a directional light as of yet and all directional lights must be removed from the scene before deferred mode can be activated.

I am not sure what is crashing for you as you have not told us what you were doing at the time of crashing. Can you please give us a little more information as to what you were doing or attempting to do when you were getting crashes as this will determine where the fault can be and what fix we need to apply :)

But also it crash open the editor only and I have to start it again on second time came through sometime I get a unhandled win32 exception on the Skyline editor.exe error no. 8916 it maybe a new instance of MS VS 2010??? could be that??? I have MS Visual Studio install on my system.

when it crashes on startup as you have mentioned, please send us the "Skyline_TechSupport.txt", "Skyline.log" and "Skyline.cfg" in an archive either through a dropbox, onedrive or some other form of upload, we can then take a look and see where it breaks on startup.

Also, you could check any Windows Error Reporting files generated by Windows? These should be in:

CODE: SELECT ALL
Users\XXXX\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WER\

Hint: Look for files that have "AppCrash_Skyline_Editor" in the name.

Also, can you send the file Shando mentioned at the start as this might also help us :)

Here are some more tips to try after you have sent us the files listed above:
  • Can you also go into the "$(SkylineSDK)/Skyline/Data/Resources" and delete both these files exactly:
    "SkylineResources.cfg" & "SkylineMaterialResource.cfg", but you must leave the one with base in the name intact.
  • In the "Win32_Release" folder please delete the "Skyline.cfg"
  • Then try and reboot skyline.

ok, i hope the deferred answer helped you. Are you still getting the strange boot up errors?

Note: Deferred Rendering does work, but it still has a lot of development required for many things. Forward is the best to use for now :)

Hey guys thank you a lot for your help I will upload those files for your tech to chk and see and I will do those advising suggestion on removing the cfg files mention here as soon I have some time later today. I really like these engine and hope I came contribute to there future development I will way a little longer to purchase the full app when I see a little more stable system for now I will keep trying and learn with the demo, one thing I not to crazy about is the particles generator I seen to cartoonish looking maybe is me but like I said im new to these engine and im on the process of learning the in and out.

thank you for your kind message. We are aiming and trying to make skyline the most stable we can but things like windows 10 always throw a spanner in the works lol :P

In V0.9.6, we have upgraded the particle editor to have a more complete workflow and to be easier to use and it doesn't crash as much as it used to if any now :)

is that the correct version?

Hi risc,

I believe that the *paid* version is currently at 0.9.6, whereas the *free* version is 0.9.2 (soon to be upgraded) :?:

Skyline currently uses DX9 only, though the Devs are looking at upgrading this once they sort out the current list of issues/tasks ;)
