Update(s) and development

Postby epsilonion » 15 Oct 2018, 09:57

Hi guys hope your well..

Now that the sun seems to be behind us and the rain and cold weather seems to be upon us what can we expect to see in the coming couple of months for the development side of Skyline?

I know you where working on mesh improvements, new version of physics and at some point the GUI editor getting the second half of development and fixed (to stop the crashes etc) but there seems to have been a slowdown of releases over the summer period, I know that you deserve some time off as we all do when working on a project such as this and family issues and additions (congrats).

I have supported the development of skyline for 3 years now and still believe that it is a gem of a game development platform.
When all the features get back in that Gen 1 had it will be a complete engine, I mean great UI, work flows and such a small learning curve compared to whats out there at the moment.

I can not wait for the GUI editor to get fixed, volumetric clouds and ocean system to come back.

Just looking for a little bit more information on what to expect on the lead up till Christmas..

sure no problem :)

Updates have slowed minorly due to some changes we are making and of course the family addition( ty :) )
Pretty much everything you have wrote is already is dev now.

I havent worked much on the new physics upgrade for a while as we have been working on other bits, same with the mesh optimizations although the merging of submeshes sharing the same material has already been done and ready for the next update.

On the UI note, well, this is secret at the moment.
GUI is still planned in, just trying to find the time to work on it. Plus we have the newer Noesis GUI system to integrate.
Ocean...... There is a high possibility of this being added back in fairly soon, it wont be the same ocean as the previous one was far too sluggish.

Volumetric clouds... this is the one which is probably the slowest to come although we still have the trueskies system to integrate.

The vegetation trees spraying is already in development.
Changes based on the last log are also being worked on and is another reason for the slow update as we change the licensing system to match the new system.

I have supported the development of skyline for 3 years now and still believe that it is a gem of a game development platform.
When all the features get back in that Gen 1 had it will be a complete engine, I mean great UI, work flows and such a small learning curve compared to whats out there at the moment.

Thanks for supporting us, much appreciated. On a project as long as this one, we have to maintain work efficiency which means at times we have to slow down as to not burn out. but as always, we work on skyline everyday for as much as we can.

and yeah, constant rain here now... horrible lol :P

Welcome @monkeyfrogstudio to the community, we are transitioning back to the forum from Discord at the moment so it might be quite in here for a while.. :P

Having the dev's on discord every time there where in the studio was causing to many issues with the development time scale as everyone wanted one to one help so it was canned finding the forum was a better solution..

No worries. I like forums because it's easier to look up information. A lot of times questions are already answered. Searching a forum can keep someone from contacting the devs if the question has already been answered.

Having said that, Discord is good for immediate responses ... if there is a large enough community. ;)

Hi @monkeyfrogstudio and welcome :D

We will revisit the discord server once there is a larger community, but you can not beat the reference you gain from years of questions and answers on the forums ;)

Thanks for the welcome!

Yep. I've been around the block, so to speak. Been on the internet since there were BBs and not forums, etc. I much prefer forums. But that's me. ;)

In any case, can't wait to see what you do with the next release of Skyline!

Just a quick update. We are polishing off the editors new interface now and have just finished on the Asset manager which now takes nice thumbnaIls of materials and meshes again rather than black ambience and black background. So getting there.

Whens the next update.. We should know more by the end of next week. This one is taking longer as we have to ensure every editor looks and works correctly.

I dont expect to see them before xmas especially the new gui tools. Maybe in with a slight chance of tree spraying but the Editor UI needs completed first.

Sorry for being a bother, but do you have any new information on approximately when the next release will be? I ask because as soon as that hits, I plan to purchase a license. Thanks.

Currently, we do not have a set date, but hopefully within the next couple weeks.
There are about 4 main editors left that we need to polish and finish upgrading. The script editor has just been completed with a new dark and light themed code lexer and upgraded snippets where users can make their own plus fixes with the find and options.
Next is GUI editor and mesh editor, then the visual module editor, weapons editor and grass system plugin.
Then a final polish of removing unnecessary menu items or functions to make sure what is there does something :)

i am sure after release, there will also be a little more work.

If we can release sooner then we will :)
