0.7 crashes and error

0.7 crashes and error

Postby ekam » 14 Dec 2013, 23:28

Hi,

new user here, just started with the engine.

First of all, the renderer dialog doesn't display my nvidia card(GT-520M) to select it, it acts as if there is no Nvidia card in the system: http://imgur.com/7bi1pWs
I have modified manually the Skyline.cfg and replaced this line "Rendering Device=Monitor-1-Intel(R) HD Graphics Family" with this one"Rendering Device=Monitor-1-GeForce GT-520M" and no luck(I have to clarify that "GeForce GT-520M" and "Intel(R) HD Graphics Family" are the exact names that Nvidia control panel uses for both devices, so I thought it would wok).

Second, most of the time when I start the engine I get this message without doing anything(start the engine and it appears): http://i.imgur.com/F9JhXev.png
This is the log for this special case: http://www.mediafire.com/?ewvw4ssk9dnjnwf

Third, sometimes(I still don't know the causes) the engine starts, it even allows me to load a demo level, but after a minute or two it crashes: http://i.imgur.com/MuJkq0b.png
This is the log for this special case: https://www.mediafire.com/?8fnlbcb87fs3jug

Can anyone help solving this?
Thanks

hello ekam and welcome to the forums :D

sorry to hear about your experience with the engine so far.
There is always times when someone new brings some tech that has problems with the engine.
but all the more reason to solve this issue.

To begin, we will need some info.
  • CPU
  • Ram
  • OS
  • Screen Resolution
  • General computer info...

Did you install all the dependencies that come with the installer?
Have you updated your graphics driver?

From looking at the logs, they both print the same error:
Code: Select all
OGRE EXCEPTION(3:RenderingAPIException): Error Presenting surfaces in D3D9Device::present at .\src\OgreD3D9Device.cpp (line 1031)

If we can find the right command being called, we may be able to place a catch to bypass this crash.
As the more hardware we can safely run on, the better :P

It would be good if we could have a video as videos always help when trying to identify a procedure to make it crash or locate where the error may be.

Couple of things to try:
  • if using any post FX, then turn them off using the global on/off button on the bottom window.
  • Disable the 16:9 ratio using the button on the engine view toolbar next to the perspective dropdown as the screen res may be the issue.
  • Make sure no settings were changed from the defaults on the skyline.cfg
We will help you through this issue and hopefully get your version of skyline working correctly. :D

Thanks for the quick response.

Yes, I installed all the dependencies and my graphics driver are up to date.

The system specs:
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium (6.01.7601)
DirectX: 9.0c + 10 + 10.1 + 11
CPU name: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2410M CPU @ 2.30GHz
CPU speed: 2294MHz
Memory: 4010MB
Screen size: 1366x768 (32bits)
Video card: Intel(R) HD Graphics Family

It also uses the aforementioned GT-520M.

Disabling the 16:9 ratio works :D , but I have to be quick when the editor appears to disable it, otherwise in 2 seconds it crashes.
Is there any way to have it disabled by default or to edit that property aoutside the editor?
Now it allows me to load levels without problem. I will make a landscape and will post if there is any other issue.

By the way, this engine looks awesome ;)

Good to know that your version of skyline does work :), but it would be nice to fix that error.

Funny that you ask, as we just placed the ability to keep the 16:9 ratio off today. But it isn't included in the release for tomorrow.
But luckily, the next skyline update includes an auto updater, that will upgrade your version of skyline to the latest fixes, in which we will release a patch for that fix. It all should be within the next couple of days. :D

Knowing that your skyline works when you disable 16:9 means the error exists within the resize() event of the renderwindow,
as that is where the 16:9 ratio is set.
I will look into this area.

A video of the crash would be helpful if possible :D
