Mesh editor bug

Mesh editor bug

Postby Gtox » 08 Feb 2015, 12:25

Sometimes, the screen in the mesh editor goes black (a split second after opening the editor). If you import a mesh, you cannot see it, and any changes you make (if you change the scale, for example), are not reflected in the model back in the editor.

After restarting Skyline, I see that changes to mesh were saved (I did Reload the entity, so I'm not sure why the changes were not show, initially). The screen still goes black, though, but not every time.

There are several reasons why a screen may not show:
> Black screens can occur if you have post Fx enabled and are using an ATI card.
> Sometimes the engine timer for rendering does not kick in but everything is working, to fix simply click on the taskbar and then click on the editor again. This usually resolves this problem.

Hope this helps :)

I have an Nvida card, without post fx, so it's not that. When you open the editor, you can briefly see the grid and the blue ball, which then disappear. The next time it happens, I'll try your solution.

I got the black screen again, and clicking on the taskbar and back on the editor didn't work. Restarting Skyline usually works.

oh, i have misread this topic completely lol, too many things going on at once.
Mesh editor has the black screen. right, lets solve this one. :)

and any changes you make (if you change the scale, for example), are not reflected in the model back in the editor.

To get what you see in the mesh editor back in the scene, press the reload sceneEntity button on the main toolbar or RMB + context menu in the main editor. This is required because, the mesh you edit in the mesh editor is a temporary object so any deforms on skeletons and animations don't break the character in the scene and make all the arms go all squiffy lol :P Then when saving, it overwrites the mesh you have in the scene, but it requires a refresh for changes to take effect.
There are plans to improve this, so the editor autodetects changes and offers to refresh instead for you.

It would be good to see this black screen in the mesh editor though.
Perhaps the ground plane was turned off leaving the black background, this can be turned on or off on the mesh editor toolbar.

It's not just the ground plane switching off - the default mesh (blue sphere) isn't visible either. It's not easy to replicate as it seems to be random. You get a brief glimpse of the plane and the sphere, and then it goes black. Closing down the editor and reopening it doesn't work , I have to close Skyline down. I'll try to get a video of it.

I have had this issue before but it was fixed by removing all the skyline files like the mesh, material leaving only the fbx or .x then restarting the engine and re-importing the model.

we have had some thoughts. Perhaps the position of the camera is being sent out of reach and is looking at an incorrect point.
We will have to change the background color on the next release to see if the renderer is still there or if something is blocking the top of it.

I am still having this problem guys it still works but you cant see anything if you change the scale and save it does work but its a bit of a pain for animated models as you need to see them to extract the animations :)

strange, when this happens, does the main editor go weird aswell?

I have not yet encountered this black screen in the mesh editor, but i have had the main editor view bugger up due to the onscreen information. We did reorder things a little for the last release to stop it happening in the main view.

Is their a procedure to make it happen? e.g. clicking off app while booting, etc...
Would love to fix it, but we need somewhere to start.

No it stays just the same and it is totally random the only thing i can think off is it is failing to load something at start up perhaps this is the best i could do as you can see from the video it is random and and takes a good few attempts to get it going.

I am beginning to think this is a windows 8 bug. I have copied your procedure and it seems to work every time.
We will need to look into this some more as the renderer works, because you can see the sphere and it sometimes works flawlessly. This means there is a timer or something updating that freaks it out.
We can't focus on this atm, but when possible due to time then we will PM one of you for the help to solve it. :D

no problem take your time, as you can see it still works most of the time so no big rush.
