Which i9 CPU?

Which i9 CPU?

Postby monkeyfrogstudio » 10 Nov 2020, 18:35

Hello! I wanted to pick some brains, especially since I'd been watching some old zombie movies ... ;)

If you had an i7 CPU and wanted to upgrade to an i9 CPU, which one would you choose?

I currently have an i7 5820k and would like to get the best bang for my buck. And, yes, I know I will have to get a new motherboard as well. That's part of the plan. ;) So, any help or thoughts on this would be much appreciated.

lol, we are still a little outdated on CPU side... starfire is running a 3770 i7 and im running an i7 4770 :P So any option that is recent is a good move in my eyes haha :D

As for the i9, if you are spending the money on those chips anyway, why not go the full hog on it and get yourself the unlocked version in case you want the extra power at some point, just ensure you have the power and cooling to maintain it :)
But avoid 9th gen as it didnt have the hyperthreading, 10th gen upwards

I have an 850 watt power supply, so I should be good. The 10th gen chips use 125 watts. But the prices vary quite a bit ... anywhere from just under $400 to near $700. So, trying to determine the best bang for the buck is a bit difficult. For example, I've discovered that the 10850k is almost identical to the 10900k, but is about $100 cheaper. So, is the actual "difference" in the chip itself a big deal? I don't know enough to be able to figure it out. Some sources say the two chips are virtually identical, so I am tempted to just save the cash and get that one.

Sigh. I miss the days of the old DX, DX2, and Pentiums. All you really had to do was compare the GHz. The higher the number, the faster the CPU. Now? Well, it's cores and layers and cache and turbo this and that and hyperthreading and a bunch of other stuff that could mean a 2.8GHz CPU actually runs faster than a 3.6GHz. Ugh! ;)

Too much ginger ruins the taste of brains for me. Personally, a light grill in butter is sufficient. :P

well from what i can see, the 10900k is 100mhz faster on its base clock and its turbo boost clock.
Both are 10 core / 20 thread and have all 3 turbo boosting modes, whether you use all three is up to you, but im sure that at least 1 core of the ten would be running at the 5.2ghz on the 10850k

i9 10900k is 3.7ghz base and 5.3ghz max speed.
i9 10850k is 3.6ghz base and 5.2ghz max speed.

Given that its overclockable, you could quite easily make a 10850k faster than the 10900k stock.
However, the locked versions(non K versions) are 700mhz slower so that is quite a dip, so if you are looking for fastest but budget then i would use the 10850k.

Although saying this, you can get the 10900KF(notice the F) which basically means it does not have any inbuilt graphics and reduces prices quite considerably almost to the price level of the 10850K. In UK its about £10 difference, not sure about dollars.

However, i would recommend a good motherboard to pair with this chip especially if you are overclocking and having access to the faster ram speeds 3200mhz or greater would be ideal.

Hope this helps make your mind up.

The "F" series are locked, so you can't overclock them. That's what makes the K series more attractive. 100Mhz is not a big deal, as far as I am concerned, so the 10850k sounds like the best deal to me. And from what I've been reading, in some instances, you can get better results with the 10850k than with the 10900k, though otherwise they are virtually identical. I am pretty sure the 10850k is the way I'll go.

The motherboard is the next thing to look at. I currently have 128GB of DDR4 RAM in my current system, but its 8 sticks of 16GB each. I've only found boards with the LGA1200 four memory slots thus far. So, if I go with any of the 10 series (other than any of the X chips), it seems I am restricted to four memory slots and, thus, will be reduced down to 64GB. However, I don't think I'll miss the other 64GB ... not for the speed increases I'll get with the new CPU and MB.

Well, found a deal on a i9-10900k 10th gen CPU (new) and took it. So, the CPU's on the way. :)

EDIT:
Motherboard and air cooler on the way, too. I should have the new system built next week!

great to hear you got your chip and are on your way to a fast build, hope you enjoy!!! :D,
Just for others that may read this, the KF series chipped are not locked:

The clock multiplier on the Core i9-10900KF microprocessor is not locked. The processor can be effortlessly overclocked on most motherboards when greater performance is desired

Correct. From what I've read, the KF series are not locked. But the F series are. Sorry if I made it a bit confusing with my previous post. I believe the KF is the same as the K, but without the intel graphics.

Can't afford the graphics card update ... yet. That will be about 6 months down the road. But I am currently running a GTX 1080 ti. So, that's a pretty powerful card. The 1080 ti was sort of an Nvidia mutant at the time ... way too powerful compared to the other 10 series cards. It holds its own against most of the 20 series cards and can almost compete against some of the 30 series cards. And since I don't really care about RTX at this juncture, the ol' 1080 ti is still good enough for me. ;)

yeah, they are decent cards, we are still rocking the 1060 6gb which seems enough for 1080p most of the time :P Was going to get the rtx 3070 but ended up having to get a car lol :P Not really into the RTX thing yet, never tried but seems a bit of a fad at the moment, needless waste of performance for very little gain.
