Help and advice for Installing Skylines Toolset

Won't run on my windows xp [SOLVED]

Won't run on my windows xp [SOLVED]

Postby materene » 20 Sep 2013, 20:58

The installer is missing something with my setup, the few dependencies needed are already installed and the versions of my installs are later than required, so I'm at a loss at this point. I have un-installed the 2008 runtimes and re-installed and that had no effect either. I have a GeForce GT 440 2TB card but I do not run the latest drivers because of issues on some of my software I use. Any recommendations or changes I might make is welcomed. The error is a runtime error
Thanks

Hi welcome to the forum materene. :D
If you have successfully installed the dependencies, then it is most likely due to a setup file.

For best success, please remove Skyline.cfg from the Release folder and when prompted on next startup, choose DX9 and press ok without changing any properties.

I think i will remove those properties from the startup as alot of people have problems with them.

Hope this helps :D

OK success , the file you referred to is listed as "plugins.cfg", that's why I missed it, although it appears that file must run once before a "Skyline.cfg" can be written. I simply turned off this line "#Plugin=RenderSystem_Direct3D11" and as you said it started the engine and ask for your choice. Now I can play with it. Thanks for the help.

strange, normally with many people the error that stopped them working was the skyline.cfg holding the wrong properties.
The plugins.cfg allows you to load Dx11, openGL and Dx9, there must have been an exception when checking compatibility with your machine.

It appears that your card must not support DX11 and thats why it crashed when loading the plugins.

Q> What is your computer specs? so we can take a note for later problems

great to hear its up and running though :D

Here is a hardware list, pretty minimalistic poor mans machine, the editor seems to function well right out of the box and I'll start working with it soon. This video card is directX 11 compliant and openGL 4.0. The drivers are not up to date for a purpose and newer drivers caused tool bar issues with other editors so I went backwards on the drivers until my problems were solved.

thanks for the comprehensive information.
i don't think DX11 worked on Microsft windows XP OS, this is possibly where the problem has come from.

All we know for skyline compatitbility is that it runs on vista and windows 7.
I think there are users on windows 8 and i believe it works for them.

Yes I read up on it myself since I use XP, I actually have Windows 7 64bit but I don't use it. Just turning off the DirectX11 line in plugins works fine, out of curiosity I turned it back on after the Skyline.cfg file had been posted the first run and it once again balked and gave an error, so I just turned it back off and all is still good.

we will have to make a note in the manual, that windows xp makes skyline crash when loading the DX11 Plugin.
Thanks for your help :D

My pleasure, I was watching the videos last evening and the Terrain tools look really super, the quality of those meshes look very nice and will be a fast way to get some levels up and running for anyone. I'm going to play with those this evening and see how I can do on my own, I have a lot of standalone terrain tools but my work always look like crappola. :)

We are interested to know how you get on with Skylines Terrain tools, look forward to hearing how Skyline compares to your other tools ;)

There seems to be an issue in the view control tab, Perspective, bottom etc, when I am in the Terrain mode attempting to use the tools and then switch views using that upper tab I lose control of the view, it does not return to perspective from say bottom or the other views. At one point the entire scene started to move away from me with no control what so ever. The only way to stop it was to just shut down and restart the engine. I changed my mouse just to make sure there wasn't any simple hardware issue and I don't think it made a difference. Everything starts normal again and the problem repeats itself so there is something in the code that is not functioning like it should. Just for grins I think I will select OpenGL on the next try and see if that might stop the issue.

The issue you mention is a small bug/hiccup which can be fixed but we have learned to work around it

The problem is:
If you are moving with either WSAD or other move keys and you click off the scene view, the camera will continue moving. This is due to the system not seeing your key up event. The way around this is to click in the scene, then press and release the key for the direction the camera is moving, presto! you have control again.( requires no restart )

We will look at fixing it very soon for you ;)

That sounds good and I'll keep that in mind, however that view tab issue seems to be something by itself. I tried going to OpenGL and it will not run for me, tried every change I possibly could in that config file, I let it write a new one each attempt at trying something else. So I gave up on OpenGL but I did reinstall the latest NVidia drivers for my card family and the problem is the same, it leaves you in an overhead view looking down and choosing any other view you get only sky, I also tried walk mode and the same there no change. I have the directional light gizmo ticked since it is required to start the terrain tools and new terrain creation , I have not tried turning it off and checking out the view tab. If it makes a difference I'll let you know. :)

I wanted to add one more problem that occurred while in that Terrain creation mode, I tried on several occasions to just exit the engine using the file tab and not saving anything I was working on, typical for someone that would just be feeling their way around, it does not exit cleanly and crashes completely if you have Terrain creation on the scene window. :)

i have tried to reproduce this on my machine, but with no vegetation or roads, only using the height editing tools and painting tools.
It seems to close without any hiccups. Do you have a process in which i can follow to make this happen and then hopefully fix this issue. :D

I'll try and document everything better and maybe even get a copy of the error message that it will write, I've tried it several times and it seems to happen each time with that Terrain creation module running, I too had no roads or anything other than using the creation tools for height and such. I don't know what the engine tries to save when you shut down but it might possibly be my anti virus stopping an action, Avast will do this and does not give any message when doing so, since the engine is in the high C directory it could be that, just a thought for me to check out. It's easy enough to have it ignore the engine so I can give that a try when I start again. If it continues to crash on exit I'll re install to the program directory and give that a shot, this is windows XP so your system is probably completely different, and it's home edition although there is no difference in home and pro other than some net tools, I think I have my registry changed to show this is actually pro so it could run some picky stuff. That said I like the layout of the terrain creation tools and the brushes look very good, especially all the erosion choices. I wanted to get to making some new textures and see how they might look but first things first. :)

I made the entire folder ignored in my anti virus and it doesn't appear to have helped the crashing on exiting, I was able for the first time to see a side left or right view of terrain that I created. I went into my crash folder and made sure nothing was in there this test and the enclosed report shows a crash report , I see my avast poking it's head up but that may be normal even if the Skyline engine is shut down at that point, I simply don't know and will wait until you read it and see if you see anything I can add take away or try :D I see no file upload so I'll just post it here.

Re: Won't run on my windows xp

We have no clue as to what's going on !!

Further investigation is needed. Can you write down the steps you are doing to make this crash or even better upload a video ( prefered ).

For now can you try to close Skyline by closing the open dos window as this may help you to quickly close Skyline. Let us know if closing the dos window works for you. Thanks ;)

Just a thought, when you are playing with the terrain and then decided you don't want that terrain, you can either press the delete terrain button or just flatten the terrain with the flat height map preset( 1st in the list) or even click on the new scene button. Therefore no need to shut down Skyline.

Hope this helps a little ;)

I tried just about everything I could do and it still crashes when working in the Terrain module. I ran my system in a safeboot mode to where nothing was loaded but the game engine and only the needed devices for the computer, no sound.. still crashed so that pretty much eliminated a rogue unfriendly program interfering. I defaulted my graphics card to factory settings and same there no change. I would like to try that OpenGL mode but for some reason it too does not run same as DirectX11, I have the OpenGL 4.4 drivers loaded. What are the other two listings with the normal OpenGL Plugin=RenderSystem_GL ?
#Plugin=RenderSystem_GLES
#Plugin=RenderSystem_GLES2 ?

One other thing I am getting ready to try is to un-install my DirectXSDK, it is possible things are trying to render through it rather than the system DirectX, the debug mode in that sdk does cause things to actually run slower and you don't realize it is running. So I'll try that and see if there is any change. This is a good example as to why a developer even a hobbyist should have a dedicated system to develop with and not a normal daily usage machine, there are way too many things running in the background even when I have turned most un needed things off in my startup.

Thanks for the in depth effort of finding the bug, but i think we need to look at an alternative method. :)

What are the other two listings with the normal OpenGL

The openGLES and openGLES2 are mobile renderers which are currently not implemented into the engine yet.

I think the last option now to help this issue is to record a video of your skyline running, then crashing when closing. It might also help to show the DOS console last in the video. :D

This will help us to recreate or spot the problem when you are working that we can use to fix the bug.

I made a video this morning but my mouse is old and does one of those double click fits when it likes, so while I was recording it accidentally showed that I was selecting creating a terrain two times, of course that shouldn't happen but it did, I'll discard it and try and make one without that mouse error, keep in mind I was using another mouse when the problems I talk about happen not this cranky one. One thing I haven't done is to look at the command box when the crash occurs, I'll do that first and see if I see something that might help. One other thing I changed this morning was my ram settings hoping it might be in the memory handling and still no change what so ever. I wish I had my other machine running win 7 64 up with enough drive space to try it on that one, I had to use all the drive space for storage and haven't gotten around to putting in a new hard drive with some size. I'll post a video soon and let you see more accurately what is happening. Only the Skyline engine crashes not my system... :)

I don't know if this is helpful or not, by the time it gets uploaded and compressed twice the quality sucks, even using mp4 the final is pretty bad.

thanks for uploading the video.
I copied every action you did within the video and my computer did not crash when trying to paint with the texture. :?

we have to put this down to XP's compatibility with skyline, and seeing how we no longer own anything with xp means we cannot test this deeper.
Our best option to say to you, is try upgrading to later versions of windows and see if this happens still.

Going from your hardware:
> 4Gig of ram,
> NVIDIA GeForce GT 440
> Processor x86 Family 15 Model 4 Stepping 9 GenuineIntel ~3200 Mhz

This is powerful enough to run skyline, as skyline is only 32bit anyway which means only 3gig ram maximum can be used.

One other thing you could possibly try is reducing the terrain size used to say "512", with a "world size" of "1000 or 2000".
apart from that, we are clueless as to whats happening.

A couple of questions for you and the community

Q> Does it always crash on the painting? even when you "load skyline>add terrain>edit height, then paint".
Q> Is Anyone on the forums willing to try following the video posted exactly and see if it crashes on your machine, to try and detect whether it is a windows compatibility issue?

I am very sorry that you are having this issue :(
