what happened to course this crash.
i had just finished making the best desert scene ive ever seen in an engine :D
i wanted to add a few rocks to the scene, so going to the vegitation models properties panel i types in rock as the name,
followed by choosing rock in the drop down box list, then i hit the choose me button and found a rock from the rock folder.
clicking ok to use this rock coursed the crash. i might be doing something wrong here i guess but im not to sure yet sorry.

great idea to start your own thread. :D

all terrain work is easy inside skyline, but it is a shame that it crashed.
TIP: Save regularly as skyline can crash, when you have something that looks good, make a save lol.
Also make backup files, just in case of corruption.

Note: The dropdowns for the "Tree", "bush" and "rock" are currently not used as the vegetation system is in development but close to completion, still a few things to stop crashing and a few features to add lol :P.

i have replicated the problem and caused a crash on my system.
I don't think that rock was happy being loaded in. i will try to add a catch in place and stop any model from causing the same error.
thanks again and i will keep you posted :D

ok, i have managed to locate why this model was crashing when chosen for the first time such as your description to crash.

What was happening?
When you chose to use that model from the dialog, a material file gets generated in the same directory as the mesh which is used for the vegetation system,
but when a mesh is loaded and the material does not exist within the resources or within the .material file, it crashed as it tried to pull information from it.

This now has a catch in code and should not crash when trying to convert materials that do not exist. :D
We are soon to release a patch update with this fix and other changes.

Info:
> Materials are referenced by meshes and they are stored inside the .material files.
> There may be one or more materials in a .material file.

thanks again for your help :D

np, they only need done if we cant replicate the problem, saves work on both sides lol.

ah I see, so I was doing something wrong, my bad sorry.

don't worry, its noting bad. The idea of this dropdown was to allow different vegetation to have different distances that the impostors would fade in at. This was to aid in performance of your game, as bushes and rocks do not need to be in the distance as far a tree would.
i just gotta make the system.. which will be happening somewhere before the full release of skyline. :P
