Crash on water and model import to scene [SOLVED]

Crash on water and model import to scene [SOLVED]

Postby AuShadow » 19 Feb 2015, 16:26

Just got the paid version and was setting up a scene to display some Medusa Pro rocks in this engine and some crashes that i was getting with the free version still exist in the paid versions as such:

1. I remove the start up terrain and add my own terrain
2. I then sculpt the terrain to what i want
3. I use enviro editor and add water
3.1 - Now if i try and change water height it does nothing
3.2 - If i try and load a different water its an instant crash (all skyline screens get a transparent white overlay and become unresponsive
4. So without any changes to water and Lowering the start height of my terrain instead (flatten out to -10)
5.adding models to the scene and editing with mesh editor was fine
6.EDIT: sorry didnt crash on model import, crashed on making new folder in scene entity list

If you are online within the next 2-3 hours i can live stream (via Twitch) what i am doing so you can see exactly what happens, its something I do that makes it easy for Tattie to help me out :P

Hi AuShadow,
Thank you for the sale and no problem, i will help you through these issues :D

3.1 - Now if i try and change water height it does nothing

The Water system cannot be edited while the terrain is being edited. To change any water settings, make sure you select the first tab(creation tab) on the terrain editor to disable editing mode before making any changes to water.
Perhaps a message box should be shown or warning in the console to inform you. :P

3.2 - If i try and load a different water its an instant crash (all skyline screens get a transparent white overlay and become unresponsive

This is possibly the same error as before, were you in editing mode of the terrain?

The reason we disabled the water editing while the terrain is being edited was because of the changes the water system does to the terrains material. Which you don't want to happen when editing lol :P
I will look into this and get a fix in play :)

6.EDIT: sorry didnt crash on model import, crashed on making new folder in scene entity list

I have also seen this one happen over the past couple of days myself. Again, i will have a look in code and see if i can produce a fix for the next release. There were tweaks to this section not long ago :)

Awesome, and yes for both water crashes i was in-fact in terrain editing mode and as a new user i didn't see anything that said DO NOT EDIT WHILE EDITING TERRAIN :P, so something to alert the user to this would be friendly, maybe even a way to disable editing the water while terrain editing is active?, perhaps if terrain editing is active it should prevent the enviro editor opening at all. Anyway those are just thoughts (and i have had a few beers at this stage :D), I will continue to try and build this scene as when i get a good enough scene i was going to post some screens as a medusa Pro demo as i seen you have a thread for that program and i have had quite a play with it

cool, i look forward to seeing those screenshots :D
Medusa Pro and Forester are both good packages. I have noticed however that the tree leaves can have strange normal/tangent effects in game especially when rotating the tree. I did check this in other engines, but the same errors were in those as well.
So certain trees may need a bit of work in a modelling package. But they are ok most of the time and generally have a high quality.

we all like to have a bit of a drink at times while working, learning & of course playing.. lol :P

We can't stop the environment editor being opened while editing terrain, as sky boxes, dynamic sky and height fog can all be tweaked while using the terrain, but we could disable the panels or at least display a message on the editor to let you know :)

I am working on this now for the next release :D

2 fixes so far :)

1) Ocean load file - this option can no longer be used while editing the terrain.

2) Ocean Editing while terrain editing active - when you change a property, a message box appears and a print to the console also shows. The reason i have done it this way as the code was already backing out and had a function, so simply added a message in lol :P

There is still a strange crash from time to time when loading a different config. I have put some traces in while working to see if i can find out where its going wrong.

Do you know of any specific method to make the folder crash. As it seems to be working for me atm lol :P
it would help speed this fix up.

The random crash when changing ocean files over and over now is caught most of the time.
Since it throws an error, it disables the ocean and refresh the terrain material to stop it going black. :)

Just the folder bug to go now.

Edit: I have now found the create folder crash and can replicate it every time. I am working on a fix now :)

Edit 2:
6.EDIT: sorry didnt crash on model import, crashed on making new folder in scene entity list

This is now fixed and has been a bug that has existed for a long time. Thanks for helping :)
